There’s an old saying that horizontal stripes are “unflattering.” Well, I beg to differ. No offense but whoever said that was 1. WRONG and 2. WRONG.
There’s a way to wear stripes and that’s anyway you want. With denim, with leather, with florals, with more stripes. Either way, there’s a couple staples to have in your wardrobe when it comes to stripes and I’m going to share with you a few of my “must-haves” + my favorite ways to style these underrated lines.
I used to stay away from stripes. No idea why, but I don’t know what I was thinking. They are such an essential in my wardrobe and they complete any outfit. There are a couple “staple stripes” that every gal (or guy) should have in their arsenal.
The perfect striped tee
This is a must. Partly because it’s my favorite. Anything that I can dress down, but still look like I’m trying, is a must for me. And when I say the perfect striped t-shirt, I mean try a gazillion until you find the one that fits you like a glove and that you can picture wearing it with anything. That’s when you know you’ve found a good one. Also, don’t feel like it has to be black and white, because it doesn’t. I scored a killer burgundy one from Topshop just the other day and it’s only $15. I’ll have it linked at the end of this post so keep reading to snag that deal.
The perfect striped dress
I can’t be the only one who thinks dresses are the most comfortable clothing you can wear. That’s probably why I have a million striped dresses in my wardrobe. They’re usually my go-to in summer because the look so good with wedges, pumps, and sneakers. Also, make sure you pick up an oversized one for Summer, because these serve as the perfect beach cover-up too!
The perfect striped sweater
This is my favorite staple that’s perfect for Fall + Winter. Especially, when you’re feeling those Fall vibes and want to wear every maroon, rust, and olive colored piece of clothing you can. There are a ton of cozy sweaters in stores and most people go for plain colored styles, so you’re sure to stand out with a horizontal striped sweater. My favorite way to pair it? With a colored leather skirt, like this one from ASOS. You could even pair it with a pair of Topshop trousers, like these, and some pumps for a more professional look.
The perfect striped button down
Speaking of professional, nothing looks more professional than a button down. But you can totally keep is casual when pairing it with denim and some slides, or even sneakers. This is going to be one of the most functional pieces you can have in your wardrobe and the most versatile too. I recommend having both an oversized and fitting style in your closet at all times so you’re ready for any occasion.
